Environmentally Sustainable Health Research (SHARE): Evaluating Sustainability Tools in Kenyan Health Research Contexts

This study represents the Kenya component of the Environmentally Sustainable Health Research (SHARE) project, a three-year international research initiative funded by Wellcome Trust. The SHARE project employs a multi-country comparative approach across the United Kingdom, India, Kenya, Ghana, and Brazil to examine how environmental sustainability tools developed primarily in the Global North function within diverse geographical, cultural, and resource contexts.

The overarching SHARE project aims to develop context-sensitive, just, systems-focused, and reflexive frameworks for environmentally sustainable health research through empirical investigation, conceptual analysis, and co-design methodologies. While each country component maintains independence in its specific implementation and local focus, the coordinated approach enables comparative analysis that strengthens understanding of how cultural, infrastructural, and policy contexts influence sustainability tool effectiveness. Kenya presents a particularly important context for examining these dynamics due to several factors. The country serves as a major hub for international health research collaborations, hosting numerous global health studies and maintaining partnerships with research institutions worldwide.

Objectives

This study aims to assess the relevance and usability of environmental sustainability tools developed in the Global North within Kenyan health research contexts. The primary objective is to document experiences, challenges, and opportunities for integrating sustainability practices into local health research environments, ultimately providing recommendations for adapting global sustainability frameworks to African research settings.

To examine the perceptions of Kenyan health researchers regarding the practicality and cultural appropriateness of Global North sustainability tools.
To investigate how existing local environmental practices and values align with or differ from internationally developed sustainability frameworks.
To identify structural, institutional, financial, and policy-related factors that influence the implementation of sustainable research practices in Kenya.
To explore how sustainability is understood and prioritized within different Kenyan health research settings.
To assess the potential for adapting and localizing global sustainability frameworks to better suit Kenyan research environments.
To propose contextually relevant recommendations for improving the relevance, usability, and implementation of sustainability tools in Kenyan health research contexts.
